2018 Holiday Gift Guide For Travelers Over-50

It’s that time of year when many of us are searching for that perfect gift for a friend, relative or business associate.

Here are some of my recommendations for gifts for travelers over-50. Each one appeals to my own sensibilities—they are gifts I’d choose to give or gifts I would like to receive. Perhaps, they’ll resonate with you or someone else on your gift list, too.

Set of four LOQI Reusable Shoppers

These great-looking, reusable nylon shopping bags come in vibrant colors with lively designs. They are lightweight and small enough to carry inside a purse or jacket pocket wherever you go. Water-resistant, they’re perfect for carrying home last-minute gifts from the airport duty-free shop, or for taking foods or bottled water back to your rental villa or AirBnB. Each one in the set is different, showcasing the iconic highlights of Paris, London, Rome and San Francisco. You can gift them as a set, or split them up into four small gifts or stocking stuffers for your traveling friends.

Anker PowerCore 10000 Power Bank (External Battery) for Your Smartphone

gifts for travelers over-50

If you know a cell phone “power user,” who uses his/her cell phone for calls, texts, photos and data, you know how quickly batteries can run down. Travelers don’t always have ready access to an outlet to charge a phone. I carry this Anker Power Bank with me whenever I plan to be away from home for more than several hours–whether I’m traveling abroad or taking a train to Manhattan. Available in red, black or white, they come with their own drawstring pouch. It is one of the lightest, most compact chargers yet it provides enough juice to recharge a phone at least two-and-a-half times (times vary according to particular phone models). If you have an iPhone (as opposed to an Android phone), be sure to also order an inexpensive lightning cable.

Apple AirPods

gifts for travelers over-50: Apple iPods

My sister and brother-in-law gave me this nifty gift for my last birthday and I absolutely love using them, but especially when traveling. They are great for travelers who enjoy watching movies on a plane, and those who enjoy listening to music or podcasts downloaded to their phones. The AirPods are comfortable to wear, offer excellent sound quality, and hold a charge for five hours. Lightweight and smaller than the palm of one’s hand, they can be recharged in their very compact and attractive storage case.

Two-Pack of Stainless Steel Luggage Tags

What I love about these colorful luggage tags is that they are durable (and unlikely to detach from your suitcase as it is heaped onto a baggage carousel); they’re made of sturdy stainless steel, yet are lightweight; and that your personal information remains hidden inside. They also come in their own gift box. Perfect for a friend or colleague who likes to travel!

Poppin Pastel Notebooks

This is one of my favorite gifts for travelers over-50. I’m obsessed with these little notebooks and know they would be appreciated by any traveler or travel writer. You can record all memories of a single trip in a book of its own. The rainbow of colors in the box helps you remember which book was associated with a particular trip. How many times have you wanted to record the name of that special restaurant or email address of a special person you met? These high-quality books are small enough and light enough to always have one with you. Each of the 10 mini-books has 64 ruled pages; the set comes in a silver gift box. For your glitzy friends, there is also a shiny set of Poppin books available with three 192-page notebooks, three mini-pads, and three retractable gel pens in coordination colors for $29.13.

Mujjo Leather Wallet Case for iPhone XS or iPhone X

If you know someone who has treated him/herself to the latest greatest iPhone, they’ll want to make sure that it is well-protected and has an elegant case to match. This leather case has an integrated pocket that can hold a credit card and driver’s license (or a few business cards). It also has a raised bezel to protect the phone’s screen. Made of luxurious full-grain leather, it comes in blue, black, gray, olive and tan. (Similar cases are also available for travelers still using older iPhone models).

All-New Kindle Paperwhite E-Reader

gifts for travelers over-50: Kindle Paperwhite

Anyone who travels and reads wants a Kindle. Those who already have one will probably want to upgrade to this now-waterproof model that is perfect for those who enjoy relaxing poolside or on the beach. It’s also thinner and lighter than older versions. The glare-free screen is perfect for sunny climates and the built-in light adjusts for indoors or outdoor reading. A single battery charge can last for weeks!

  1. What some great ideas Irene. I need a power bank for my smartphone – that would be so useful. I also love the travel wrap. Just right for plane journeys. I’ve pinned and shared on SM 🙂

  2. This is a nice collection for travelers over 50. The items all seem upscale and well made. Thanks for sharing.

  3. I’m a little notebook junkie too. I almost pulled the trigger and bought these and still might, but first I have to check my inventory of little notebooks I already have on hand to convince myself that it wouldn’t be ridiculous for me to buy some more! Then, even if it is ridiculous, I might still “have” to buy them.

  4. Great gift ideas. Now that I just bought a new iPhoneX, I’m thinking about those bluetooth earbuds. Just hope they won’t fall out of my ears when I exercise. I also like the little totes you highlight. I have one that a friend gave me and it is so handy for traveling, especially for groceries when going to a farmers market.

  5. As someone who would gladly trade their entire wardrobe for a closet of soft pajamas, I have my eye on that travel wrap. What a perfect balance of chic and cozy! Now I just have to figure out if it’s socially acceptable to wear it every day!

  6. This is a great gift list! I especially like the luggage tags; I go through them so fast because they break off so easily. Maybe stainless steel is the way to go. I think I might order them for myself!
