I have a son who is 37 and has had schizophrenia since he was 17, if not before, and have been involved with NAMI for many years. A main reason that comes up repeatedly, if the patient is not suffering from strong side effects, for not taking meds is that the person feels like meds put a blanket over their emotions and they miss feeling…feeling anything so they are alive. Over the years I have found this the hardest to address. Side effects: lower dosage, change meds, add something that addresses the issue…but nothing seems to address this. The problem of feeling vs not feeling does not go away and we NAMI parents spend much of our discussions on this. Please include this in your next edition so parents who are new can understand they are not alone in facing this.
