Why you shouldn’t skip your vacation
Many Americans resist taking a vacation, but that needs to change.
Vacations are restorative. A periodic break from jobs and the stresses of everyday routines allows time for reflection, relaxation and a change of perspective. A vacation offers opportunities to strengthen bonds with family and friends and have been shown to enhance work productivity.
Although it may appear counterintuitive, The Harvard Business Review reported that people who take vacations tend to have a better chance of getting raises or promotions than those who leave paid vacation days on the table. Yet despite these benefits, Americans appear to be skittish about taking time off from work — even paid vacations.
Clearly, a change of mindset will require efforts on the part of both workers and managers to reverse the trend. In my latest article for Next Avenue I offer a set of suggestions to encourage working people to more fully utilize this earned benefit that’s often left on the table.
