Inn on the Alameda: Convenience and comfort close to Canyon Road
If you are visiting Santa Fe, the Inn on the Alameda makes a great base for your stay.
The Inn on the Alameda, at the corner of Paseo de Peralta and East Alameda Street in downtown Santa Fe, is conveniently located only a few blocks from the museums nearby the Plaza (a National Historic Landmark) and a stone’s throw from the legendary galleries, shops and restaurants on Canyon Road.
Somewhat of an oddity in today’s world of branded hotels, the same local family has owned and operated the property for more than two decades. It grew in size over the years as the owners acquired contiguous buildings on the same block but it still remains intimate, with a total of 72 guest rooms (12 of them suites) set over 2.5 acres.
With Pueblo-style architecture, courtyards behind adobe walls, and colorful ristras (red strings of chile) hanging outside, the buildings blend into the surrounding residential neighborhood. Most of the rooms have relaxing private patios or balconies.
Perhaps the nicest part of staying at the Inn, however, is its warm, friendly ambiance. The knowledgeable and helpful staff we met, Diana and Jose, had been working here many years and take great pride in making sure guests feel welcome. The inviting rockers in front of the fireplace in the reception area make it feel homelike.
The rooms are immaculately clean and functional, furnished in southwestern style with handcrafted chests and armoires, Native American art, and paneled wood ceilings. We stayed in Room 150, a deluxe King on the ground floor of one of the newer buildings. Our bed was exquisitely comfortable.
With ten buildings and a host of different room configurations (many with working fireplaces) at different price points, guests are likely to find just the right room to fit their needs. Our windowed bathroom had a single sink and combination tub/shower but otherwise the accommodations felt spacious and up-to-date.
The value-conscious guest won’t feel nickeled and dimed at the Inn because of several unique perks included at no-additional cost.
- A free buffet breakfast is offered each morning in a room off the main lobby. On the morning of our stay, there was a choice of cereals, yogurts, fruit, quiche, egg frittata, pastries, and freshly squeezed juices. Between 4-5PM, complimentary wine and snacks are offered at the bar.
- Free parking is available beside each of the buildings.
- There are no additional charges for wireless Internet.
The Inn has a self-service, coin-operated laundry on site, in-room refrigerators, and the newly remodeled Agoyo Lounge offers an interesting light dinner menu. Because traffic and parking can get dicey in the downtown area, the Inn offers a complimentary shuttle service within a two-mile radius.
The Inn was named one of the top 25 hotels in the southwest in Conde Nast Traveler’s 2012 Readers Choice Awards. We weren’t surprised to learn that some 40 percent of visitors to the Inn are repeaters, many returning year after year.
